Arena Rex: Otho

Welcome back!

This week I have a real treat. A few years ago (ok 7 years from this posting) Spartacus was released. An epic show with gladiator combat from Roman history, defiantly NSFW. Aside from the nudity, gratuitous violence, and awesome plot lines that show introduced some great characters in the gladiatorial age.

Fast forward a few years and a small company named Red Republic Games unleashes a Kickstarter project named Arena Rex. Loving the art and the sculpts, I backed the project at a small level just for a taste. Today I am going to share a personal project of one of these gladiators, Otho Mentulus from the Ludus Magnus faction.

Otho Mentulus
First, I would like to point out he is resin, like all Arena Rex miniatures. Some of them come with metal bits that are too risky for resin (spears and staves). The base you see also comes with all Arena Rex figures (minus the sand, added that myself).

I wanted to go for a non-metallic look for his armor and shield, and that took quite a bit of practice and patience. One of the trickiest things to have done for me, but worth it in the end.

Otho's skin was also a step up from what I am used to, but with help from fellow guides, I was able to get the color I wanted to achieve. A lot of work went into getting those colors just right.

The sand was done using basic small grain grit and painting to a color to represent sand. Using a spare foot, I "stepped" in place where others may have walked before, and did a light black wash for his shadow in the sand.

And there you have Otho Mentulus of the Ludus Magnus from Arena Rex.

This guy was such a blast to paint. Although the hours put in were long, and at times I wanted to give up I am glad I didnt. I still have the others to paint, but until I get more free time I dont see that happening soon.

I hope you enjoyed this special look into one of my personal collection, and thanks for reading.

Until next time!
